Native American style petroglyph figural earrings, a representative interpretation in sterling silver. Each earring is slightly different but is a sympathetic partner to the other. This pair of petroglyph figures are each approximately 3-1/2" long and are as light as a feather! All wires are meticulously soldered in place by hand for an interpretation of native American petroglyphs found in the desert southwest. Handmade sterling silver earwires are comfortable in the earlobe.
These earrings are made by hand and each may differ slightly from those pictured. This is the charm of handmade.
More than 10,000 petroglyphs are scattered across the American Southwest. Petroglyphs are figures and images chiseled into rock surfaces whereas their close cousins, Pictographs, are painted on rock faces, often in caves where ancient pigments can be protected from the sun.
Opinions are mixed when deciphering the exact meaning of the thousands of petroglyphs even among experts in the field. Some symbols are thought to indicate the presence of shelter or water, figural carvings are thought to represent powerful Shamans or individuals however a number of the carvings are considered to be celestial, perhaps indicating solstices and planetary movements.
There are even archaeological sites that have been found to be astronomical observatories similar to the famous Stonehenge near Bath, in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
